Choosing a video production company in Calgary, a buyer's short course
Search "video production Calgary" and you'll meet three hundred companies with drone reels and the word *cinematic* on their homepage. They are not interchangeable. Here is the short course we wish every house had before their first quote.
The three kinds of quotes
**The day-rate quote** ($1,500–$4,000) buys a camera operator and their kit for a day. Fine for event coverage; fatal for brand work, because nobody owns the *idea* — you are directing, whether you meant to be or not.
**The package quote** ($3,500–$6,500) buys a template: interview, b-roll, sixty seconds, two revisions. It is efficient exactly because your film will be structured like everyone else's. If you have seen one med spa video in Calgary, you have seen forty.
**The engagement quote** ($6,500–$18,000) buys authorship — concept, direction, edit and grade owned by one studio, composed for your house alone. We broke the full arithmetic down in [what a brand film costs in Calgary](/brand-films/journal/brand-film-cost-calgary).
Five questions that expose a template factory
1. **"What would you make for us?"** — asked before you describe what you want. A studio with a point of view has one immediately; a factory asks for your brief. 2. **"Whose voice carries the film?"** If the answer is "we'll license a track," walk. Your founder's voice is the one asset competitors cannot copy. 3. **"How many clients do you take a month?"** Volume and authorship are enemies. [We take a few houses a season](/brand-films/qualify), which is the only honest way to promise attention. 4. **"Show me a film for a business like mine — and tell me what you'd do differently now."** Craftspeople critique their own work. Factories defend it. 5. **"What happens after delivery?"** The right answer covers cutdowns for the season — like the ones in our [Calgary engagements](/brand-films/services/video-production-calgary) — not an invoice for storage.
When the expensive option is the cheap one
A $3,000 video you replace every year costs more than a $12,000 film that positions you for five. The arithmetic only fails when the expensive film is expensive *without authorship* — production value poured into a template. That is the one outcome this guide exists to help you avoid.
When you're ready to talk to a studio rather than a vendor, [the application takes two minutes](/brand-films/qualify).
