Ask to see a full film, not only a trailer

A sixty second teaser can be assembled from almost anything. A complete film reveals whether a storyteller can hold a feeling for several minutes, and whether the quiet moments are given room to breathe.

Listen to how they talk about sound

The look of a film is only half of it. The vows, the laughter, the toast that breaks halfway through, these are what return you to the day. If a filmmaker speaks only about cameras and never about voices, take note.

Make sure the delivery is promised in writing

Beautiful work means little if it arrives a year late. A serious studio will give you a clear delivery window and put it in your agreement.

Trends will come and go. Warmth, restraint, and an honest ear for the day will not.
